42-year-old male with previous kidney transplant and subsequent immunosuppressive treatment
Autopsy: damage and “dirty” discolouration of ventricular walls in both cerebral hemispheres
- Note the inflammatory process with numerous cytomegalic cells in the ependyma and the subependymal glia (nuclear, occasionally paranuclear inclusion bodies; so-called owl`s eye inclusions)
- The ependyma and the subependymal glia are preferred locations for CMV. Abscesses and glial-node-encephalitis can occur.
