- The affected area is demarcated by perifocal oedema (loosening of brain tissue). The bordering zone of necrotic tissue contains a dense accumulation of macrophages with vessel proliferation. Resorption of necrotic tissue.
- The superficial cortical layers are spared (the subpial lamella are intact) since the meninges provide a certain supply of blood.
