25-year-old male gardener, dies 3 weeks after drinking paraquat (a herbicide) with suicidal intent. Autopsy specimen.

- The original lung architecture is vaguely recognizable.
- Alveolar septa can be recognised by their thickening and distinct collagenisation.
- The alveoli are filled with loose connective tissue, numerous fibroblasts and relatively soft collagen fibres.
- Clusters of numerous alveolar macrophages
- Some bleeding
- Focal superinfection with pus (granulocytes)
