52-year-old male, known to have had chronic active hepatitis. Death after hepatic coma

- Extensive necrotizing tumour mass invading a cirrhotic liver
- The tumour is poorly demarcated by surrounding liver tissue and trabecular structures with scarce stroma which consists exclusively of sinusoidal vessels
- The tumour is of trabecular structure and highly polymorphous, partly consisting of small cells, individual clear cells and sporadic giant cells. No bile production in the given specimen (the latter would be diagnostic for HCC=hepatocellular carcinoma)
- HCCs frequently invade the venous system.
