  ICD-10: C15.9; ICD-O: 8070/3

56-year-old male, presenting with several weeks history of increasing dysphagia, weight loss; receives oesophago-gastrostomy;

-cross section through opened oesophagus
- In part, normal oesophageal wall layers (non-keratinised squamous epithelium, muscularis mucosae, submucosa, 2 layers of muscularis propria, adventitia) can be clearly seen
- The mucosa is interrupted by a solid, poorly differentiated carcinoma infiltrating all wall layers with beginning keratinisation. This leads to the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma.
