A IV 59 ascites in peritoneal carcinomatosis, cytology PAP
  ICD-10: C48.2 oder C78.6; ICD-O: 8010/9
55-year-old female underwent paracentesis of ascites. Following centrifugation, a cytologic smear of the sediment was prepared.
- The background consists of numerous small inflammatory cells (granulocytes and lymphocytes), macrophages, histiocytes and mesothelial cells. The latter are medium-sized, mostly rounded cells with nuclei showing slight variations in shape and abundant finely vacuolated cytoplasm.
- Single or groups of medium- to large-sized cells exhibit hyperchromatic nuclei of varying size and shape. The chromatin is coarsely clumped, the cytoplasm lightly stained. The cellular morphology corresponds to cells of an adenocarcinoma.
