35-year-old male underwent surgical excision of nasal polyps (see also slide A III 8).
- Respiratory epithelium with marked hyperplasia of goblet cells and focal squamous metaplasia.
- Mucosa fragment demonstrates a polypoid configuration, massive edema and infiltration by numerous eosinophilic leukocytes and plasma cells. In addition, an abundance of congested capillaries is observed.
- The presence of focal fibrosis indicates chronicity.
Additional clinical findings:
Chronic-recurrent inflammations. Polyps formed by the sinus mucosa may obstruct sinus ostia.
