61-year-old male dies of septic myocarditis in fungal sepsis. Acute infective endocarditis with vegetations and valvular destruction led to emboli to the coronary arteries (autopsy specimen).
- Several disseminated round to oval basophilic abscesses consisting of neutrophils, cellular detritus and fungal hyphae.
- Septate hyphea with acute-angle branching (characteristic of aspergillus infection).
- Surrounding myocytes demonstrate in part coagulative necrosis (increasing eosinophilia, loss of striation, fragmentation and destruction of nuclei).
