Female, 46 y., irregular pigmented, growing, slightly bleeding and itching skin tumor on the thigh. skin excision including normal skin on both sides
 
- atypical, partially large cells in the epidermis and the papillary dermis, partially in nests
- deeply invasive growth with destruction of skin adnexae
- pagetoid growth in upper epidermal layers; ulceration
- polymorphous and hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli
- mitotic figures
- groups of pigmented tumor cells with intracytoplasmatic deposits of coarse and dusty brown melanin pigment (amelanotic melanomas are devoid of melanin pigment)
- inflammatory infiltrate consisting of lymphocytes and plasma cells
 
This is a nodular melanoma, thickness at least 3mm.
