Female, 53 y., phenacetin (analgesic) abuse for years for headaches; died of transitional cell carcinoma (see sample A IV 25). autopsy material
 
- normal lobular architecture
- rough brown pigment granules in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes with perivenular accentuation -> lipofuscin: "brown fat": residual bodies of autophagy vacuoles with remainders of membranes
 
Pathogenesis:
Lipofuscin accumulates with age; accumulation is markedly increased in analgesic abuse. Phenacetin-containing analgesics have been withdrawn from the market.
