72-year-old female underwent partial gastrectomy because of gastric cancer.
A tissue section of the mucosa distant from the tumor is shown:
- Antral gastric mucosa with regular architecture.
- Some of the glands exhibit a high number of intestinal goblet cells and Paneth cells, the latter with a strongly eosinophilic granulated cytoplasm (complete intestinal metaplasia).
- Moderate chronic, minimally active inflammation with formation of numerous lymphoid aggregates.
Care has to be taken not to confuse gastric mucosa exhibiting intestinal metaplasia with enteric or colonic mucosa.
