76-year-old female dies of massive stroke due to cerebral embolism. Source of the embolus was a thrombus in the left ventricle (specimen from autopsy).
- A cross-section of the ventricle wall is shown with the endocardium, myocardium and pericardium.
- The architecture of the tissue is largely maintained.
- Throughout the myocardium partly minimal partly extensive interstitial deposits of amorphic Congo red positive material are observed. Larger deposits cause atrophy of myocytes.
Macroscopy: Thickening of the myocardium, firm consistency, cut-surface with pale-gray, waxy appearance.
