62-year-old male exhibited recurrent reddening of the skin and painful swelling of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the left big toe. Pain was to some degree dependent on the intake of food and drink. Surgical excision was performed.
 
- Section of soft tissue includes fat and fibrous tissue.
- Several large aggregates of urate crystals are sharply delineated. They are slightly eosinophilic to basophilic and appear almost homogenous.
- These foci are surrounded by reactive fibroblasts, mononuclear inflammatory cells and numerous foreign body giant cells.
