72-year-old female exhibited an indurated area of the skin of the left cheek. Excision was performed.
 
- The architecture of epidermis, dermis and skin adnexa is maintained.
- The thickened dermis displays an increased amount of collagen fibers and plump, irregular elastic fibers (elastosis).
- Epidermis presents circumscribed acanthosis and hyperkeratosis. Neither parakeratosis nor dysplasia of epithelial cells is present.

 
Pathogenesis: Cumulative and intermittent exposure to sunlight.

 
Differential diagnosis: Damage to the skin due to X-ray radiation; usually marked sclerosis of the dermis with loss of skin adnexa.
