47-year-old female experienced for some time pain, redness and swelling of the joints of her fingers; rheumatoid arthritis. A subcutaneous nodule above the elbow was excised.
- Several sections of soft tissue exhibiting prominent, irregularly delineated eosinophilic areas of fibrinoid necrosis impregnated with fibrin containing scattered neutrophils.
- Necrotic areas are demarcated by a wall of histiocytes, partly arranged in a palisading fashion.
- Scant presence of giant cells and lymphocytes.
